Research Background
Avalanche was conceptualized as a consensus protocol operating efficiently in networks of unreliable machines, addressing both crash-faults and Byzantine faults. The foundations were first shared in May 2018 through IPFS by a pseudonymous group known as "Team Rocket" before being developed at Cornell University.

Roche Freedmen Allegations (2022)
In August 2022, whistleblower group "Crypto Leaks" published a report alleging Ava Labs had entered secret agreements with Kyle Roche of Roche Freedmen law firm to legally undermine Avalanche's competitors. Emin Gün Sirer denied involvement in illegal or unethical dealings.
